Quantum of Solace

As much as I'll always have a special place in my heart for the cheesy one-liners and Q's gadgets and the crazy villains (what can I say, I grew up on Roger Moore's 007), I'm really loving this new era of Daniel Craig. Quantum of Solace hit all the right notes for me - I came out of the theater wanting to see it again. I would agree with some critics that maybe it's a little light on story, and I definitely think it could've used LESS action. My least favorite parts of the movie were some of the drawn-out action sequences, especially in the first half hour. If I have to watch another car or boat chase, I might just stab myself in the eyes. But despite that stuff, I really enjoyed the movie. I think I probably even enjoyed it a little more than Casino Royale. I'm sure I'll be in the minority on that, but Quantum kept me more engaged, and I liked the secondary characters a LOT more in this one -- M, Felix, the villain, the Bond girls. Camille interested me far more than Casino Royale's Vesper Lynd ever did (sorry, Vesper lovers).

I gotta talk about the music, too. Sort of a good news/bad news situation. The good news is that I loved the score. I think David Arnold knocked this one outta the park, and I'll be buying the soundtrack for sure. The BAD news is that I really don't like the Jack White/Alicia Keys theme song. I consider myself something of a superfanboy when it comes to the Bond themes. I know most - if not all - of the words to all of the songs. I can start singing "The Living Daylights" or "From Russia With Love" at the drop of a hat. Sad to say, the Quantum of Solace theme, "Another Way To Die," has a pretty annoying chorus that rubs me the wrong way, and it just isn't growing on me. Ultimately, that's my main complaint about the movie -- I don't like the theme song. (I've said it a hundred times.. they should've hired Duffy instead.)

Anyway, so yeah, I loved Quantum. It'll definitely be a top contender in my Favorite Movies of 2008.
