DEAD@17 pin-up

(Don't be scared, kiddies.. It's just zombie blood. She's the good guy.)

This is a pin-up I did for my buddy Josh Howard -- It'll be appearing in his new Dead@17 book, which comes out in May from Image Comics. :)

Shameless Horn-Tooting

Sorry I haven't posted any new art in awhile. Been busy with the Clone Wars book.. approaching the deadline. But I do have a couple fun things that I wanted to share with you all. :)

Awhile back, I heard from the guy who runs Leah Cairns' website and I guess she really dug my Racetrack print (the character she plays on BSG). So I geeked out and sent her a few copies. Today I got a package in the mail -- a very nice letter from Leah, along with a few signed photographs! VERY AWESOME. I particularly like the "Thong'k You." (Leah, if you're reading this -- You RUUULE.)

On a completely unrelated note --
I gotta mention this DVD: The Write Environment: An Interview with Damon Lindelof

A guy emailed me saying that he'd watched this DVD and that my name was mentioned on it. Needless to say, my curiosity exploded and I ordered my own copy. Sure enough, right there towards the beginning, they're doing a walk-through of Damon Lindelof's office and he holds up a framed copy of one of my Lost drawings and mentions my name and everything. It was really cool to see, and very flattering. Craig, thank you so much for the heads-up on that!

Battlestar panel at the United Nations

This week the U.N. hosted a discussion panel called "Battlestar Galactica: A Retrospective" to talk about how the show deals with serious issues that are very real in today's world -- human rights, terrorism, crimes against children, cultural divide, etc.

You can watch the entire two-hour video by clicking here - it's the archived video for March 17th (or I believe this link works too).

I just finished watching the panel and it's pretty interesting. A lot of great and thoughtful things are said. There are a few awkward moments (especially toward the beginning - I don't think Whoopi was the best choice for moderator) and EJO spazzes out a couple times (ya gotta love how passionate he gets - who else can start yelling "so say we all" in the U.N. and receive applause?). But it's worth checking out. There's some good, intelligent conversation. And it's cool that BSG's achieved a level of recognition where events like this can even take place. ... Ah luv mah show... *sniffle*

Needless to say, I will NOT be working tomorrow night. I will be taking a Couchpotatostar Vacationica.

His Name: Cad Bane.

Here's a monday morning sneak peek for ya. I did a drawing tutorial featuring the new villain who's making his debut in this week's "Clone Wars" season finale (check out the trailer). It should be live on StarWars.com later this week - I'll post a link when it's up.

Supposedly the character's based loosely on Angel Eyes from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. So that right there pretty much solidifies his awesomeness as far as I'm concerned. I LOVE the Eastwood spaghetti westerns.

Since I'm on the topic of Star Wars, I wanna remind everyone that I do have a few things available for sale. Help stimulate the economy and keep me from being homeless. :P

Clone Wars original comic pages. Buy one this week and I'll throw in a free Star Wars Fan Days II sketch card.

Ahsoka SW Galaxy return card, plus I still have two choose-your-own-characters available. Just like with the comic pages, buy a return card from me this week and I'll throw in a free Star Wars Fan Days II sketch card.

And of course you can still order my 2009 sketchbook.

Unfortunately I'm not taking any new commission orders right now. I have to put a halt to that sort of thing until I can catch up on work and already-existing commissions that I'm way behind on. Hopefully later this year that'll change, but for now - all I can do is keep you posted and offer up stuff like my pages and return cards.

Thanks again to everyone for their support! :)

Chris Oatley's ArtCast

I had the honor of being a guest on the latest episode of Chris Oatley's ArtCast. It's about an hour long and I talk about my projects and processes and a million other things. Here's the podcast link, or you can find it on iTunes.

I must apologize for my endless rambling in the interview... I always get nervous doing these things, plus I think he caught me in an extra chatty mood that day. So be warned. My ancient wisdom might lull you to sleep.

But Chris is a great interviewer and a super nice guy (and supremely talented!) -- it was a lot of fun being on the show. All of you should check out his past episodes, as well as his site: ChrisOatley.com.

WATCHMEN non-spoilery review

Quick background on me and Watchmen: I just read the graphic novel for the first time a few months ago, after the first movie trailer came out. I liked the book, didn't love it. The ending was my favorite part - it was very unexpected and Twilight Zoney.

So what did I think of the movie? I thought it was balls-to-the-wall awesome. Zack Snyder knocked it outta the park. I thought every actor was perfect. Every scene looked great. I was completely impressed by everything except the ending. Let me clarify -- I didn't hate the movie's ending. I just really wish they'd gone with the original "thing" that happens in the book - it feels like such a missed opportunity. With today's CGI, that would've been SUCH a cool thing to bring to life. But whatever, I thought the ending was good enough. It didn't take away from my over all enjoyment, and that's what matters.

A lot of people will have a hard time with Watchmen. I think most casual moviegoers will be expecting an action flick, and it's not at all -- it's more of a murder-mystery character drama. And it deals with a lot of complex, dark stuff. (By the way, parents, PLEASE leave the kiddies at home. Watchmen takes full advantage of its R rating.)

Bottom line: I loved the movie. I think it's going to shock a lot of people whose only real experience with "superheroes for adults" was The Dark Knight.

They mostly come out at night... Mostly.

Collector Matthew Reed started up a "Tribute to Stan Winston" jam piece. What you see above is just part of it -- I drew this Alien on the far left of the sheet. The guy with the torch is running from a T-rex, and then other characters will be added by other artists. Keep an eye on Matthew's gallery - I'm sure he'll post the complete jam piece up there when it's done. Should be cool.

I wanted to post this because I've always been a big fan of the Alien movies, and I think this is the first time I've actually drawn one of 'em... Unless I'm losing my memory, which is entirely possible.
