SWG5 Return Card: Bossk

Click the image for bigger Bossk action:

This is a Star Wars Galaxy 5 Return Card I recently finished up (thanks, Mark!) - drawn with brush pen, colored with Prismacolor markers. I only have two SWG5 Return Cards left. That's right, folks - only TWO left. Contact me at grantgoboom@gmail.com if you're interested in buying one. They're $200 each.

For those of you that don't know what a "Return Card" is and are wondering why a 2.5"x3.5" trading card would cost $200 -- basically when we (the artists) do sketch cards for a given set, we are given a small number of sketch cards to sell on our own (usually between 2 and 10). These are called "Return Cards," and they're essentially how we get paid for the work we did on the set. The Return Cards are sought after by collectors, and they're pretty rare. You get to own a unique hand-drawn piece of an officially-licensed card set, and you get to buy it direct from the artist. So it's a cool system of supporting your favorite illustrators and having a one-of-a-kind card that no other collector has.

Oh, and while we're on the topic of Bossk . . . did you see who's coming to Celebration 5?

Han Solo Tattoo

They posted a photo over at Geeky Tattoos showing a tat someone got that was inspired by one of my Han Solo drawings. Pretty cool! :)

Mohawk Storm!

I recently finished some marker commissions and this was my favorite of the batch. Being an '80s X-men fan, I always preferred the mohawk look on Storm. That's when she was tough and cool, and she had a weird relationship going on with Wolverine (who, back then, was my #1 favorite superhero). Good times. :)

You know what ISN'T good times? Me being behind on a bunch of other commissions, and behind on emails, and behind on getting stuff mailed... I'm catching up as fast as I can, folks, I promise. Thank you thank you thank you for being patient. It's been a very busy and very stressful last couple months.

Star Wars Celebration art print

StarWars.com has unleashed the first wave of exclusive art prints that will be available at Celebration V, including mine -- an Ahsoka piece titled "Around Every Corner."

As much as I loooove The Empire Strikes Back, I knew most of the attending artists would focus on Empire, so I chose to give the Clone Wars a little love and focus on Ahsoka. And let's face it - she's my favorite. :) I decided to include some of the villains that have played a major role in Ahsoka's adventures thus far, too... Plus I thought it might be fun for people to be able to buy my print and then go get it signed by the voice actors: Ashley Eckstein, Matt Wood, Jaime King, etc. So hopefully people will dig it!

Like my last Celebration piece, this one will be 11"x17", and priced very affordably. More details (and announcements) to come! Keep an eye on GrantGould.com and of course StarWars.com over the next few weeks.

Droid Hunt - Pencil & Inks

Thought it might be fun to show what my Droid Hunt art looked like before I scanned it into Photoshop for coloring.

Sharp Tongued Twain

An unexpected commission -- from my mom of all people! She asked if I could draw a sketch of Mark Twain for a friend of hers. So here it is. :)

501st Droid Hunt at Celebration V

The 501st is doing a Droid Hunt at Celebration V and they asked me if I would illustrate one of the four badges (the other three artists being Noah Albrecht, Daniel Bergren and Denise Vasquez). When I heard they wanted Bossk and Artoo on mine, I was extra excited, because those are two of my favorite characters! :)

Anyway, it was a lot of fun, and special thanks to Lesley!
And go check out the official webpage: 501st.com/droidhunt
Lots more info and cool stuff over there (and if you're confused about what the "droid hunt" is, the website will help clear things up for ya).

R.I.P. Al Williamson

CBR is reporting that legendary comic artist Al Williamson has passed away. He was probably best known for his EC stuff, Flash Gordon, etc., but for me, my first exposure to him was the comic adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back. It was one of the first comics I ever owned. To this day, every panel still feels familiar, since I'd stare at it for hours on end as a kid - plus it always reminded me of that opening day, when my dad and I stood in line for the movie (they were selling the comic at the theater). The fact that this year is the 30th anniversary of Empire makes it all the stranger. Anyway, I wanted to pay my respects - he was a huge part of the comic art world.

Cleo

A Cleo pinup I did for my buddy Mike Maihack, who is the creator of one of my FAVORITE webcomics ever: Cleopatra in SPAAAACE! :)

If you're going to San Diego Comic-Con next month, hunt him down and buy his stuff. Seriously. He's an awesome guy and his art is crazy-good.

Dark Side Ahsoka

This is the "Dark Side/Adult Ahsoka" piece I did for the HeroesCon charity art auction this past weekend. It was 8.5"x11" and drawn with brush pen, colored with Prismacolors. I thought it'd be a fun "what if" type of drawing. Congrats to the person who won it!

Big thank you to everyone who came by my table at HeroesCon -- it was a great show. :) Great to see so many familiar faces and artist friends, and of course I met a bunch of wonderful new people. Charlotte's just a cool city - I have no complaints. HeroesCon gets a big thumbs up from me.

Next up is the BIG ONE: Star Wars Celebration 5 in August (no San Diego for me this year). Fortunately I have a few weeks here to catch up on things and get back to commissions and mailing off sketchbooks and responding to emails and everything else. So stay tuned - I'll be back soon. Hopefully I'll be able to talk some Star Wars news very soon, too. ;)

HeroesCon - this weekend

HeroesCon is here! It'll be my first year and I'm really looking forward to it -- it's developed a reputation as being a very artist-friendly show. If you need any info, such as location, hours, guest list, etc., check out their official site.

My pal Otis Frampton was nice enough to post this handy dandy map showing where our tables are. Click the pic for a bigger version:

I'll have an assortment of goodies --
2010 "Inglourious Lizerds" sketchbooks ($20), 11"x17" art prints ($10 each), 8"x10" art prints ($5 each), and "The Wolves of Odin" ($5). Unfortunately I will not have any copies of my "Draw Clone Wars" book -- I sold out at last month's SpringCon.

I will also be bringing a variety of original art to sell. Some 11"x17" Star Wars comic pages, as well as smaller 8.5"x11" sized pieces, ranging in price anywhere from $5 to $300. Whatever your budget, you'll be able to buy some Grant Gould goodness!

Will I be doing sketches at the show?
Yes, I will be doing the same thing I did at C2E2 and SpringCon: I'll be taking a short list of requests (generally two per day) and they will be 8.5"x11" fully inked, black & white posed character shots for $50. Depending on how busy I am, I may offer $30 inked headshots, too, but we'll see how it goes. Head over to my table ASAP if you want to get on my sketch list.

Thanks, folks!
Seeeee you in Charlotte. :)
